Children’s Lit Festival joins KLIBF as pillar event

The Children’s Literature Festival will be a primary pillar event at the upcoming 2026 Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair (KLIBF).

Historically, the Children’s Literature Festival has always been organised by the National Library of Malaysia as a standalone event outside of KLIBF.

This marks the first time it is strategically integrated into KLIBF. The two literary forces have now converged.

This is a significant transition for KLIBF as it moves from traditional retail-focused exhibitions to a curated, festival-within-a-festival event with a specific focus on children’s content.

KLIBF has always curated programmes and designated zones for younger readers but this year’s integration of the Children’s Literature Festival marks a significant change.

In earlier editions, children’s content was primarily driven and marketed by individual publishers at their respective booths.

The key venues were small stages within the children’s halls or makeshift areas in the corridors.

The programmes were highly decentralised. Activities like colouring contests and mascot appearances were used as foot-traffic magnets for specific booths and pavilions.

The last three years saw the introduction of a curated stage for children’s content.

In 2024, we could see a specific focus on children with a centralised schedule and the grouping of activities like bilingual storytelling and meet-the-illustrator sessions.

In 2025, the KLIBF introduced international collaborative storytelling at the Singapore Pavilion, marking a shift toward cross-cultural literary exchange for young readers.

This year, we are happy to see the pivot to officially absorb the Children’s Literature Festival directly as KLIBF’s main programme.

This is a significant move on a broader scale in the Malaysian literary landscape.

We hope these events may bridge the gap between the creative market and artistry as well as between literacy initiatives and the commercial forces of the festivals.

KLIBF will run from 29 May to 7 June at its usual stomping ground, the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL).

Illustrators and authors may attend the industry masterclasses programme that will feature specialised workshops focusing on the technical and commercial aspects of children’s publishing.

Authors and publishers may also leverage the rights fair to trade and pitch translation, adaptation, and licensing rights to international markets.

Library prefects, educators and NILAM club members may look forward to the Malaysia International Federation of Library Associations (MIFLA) Junior seminar.

Interactive storytelling, high-profile book launches and creative performances are also on the agenda.

With about two million visitors expected, you may want to use the KLIBF app as the primary tool to navigate the expanded schedule.

The fair remains free to the public and will operate from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM daily throughout its 10-day run.
